On a Friday afternoon as part of recreation, pupils from Mary Astell have the chance to go and visit Stepney Bank stables. At the stables, they have been looking at stable management, grooming, feeding, and exercising horses. Each session the expectations are that the rider grooms their horse, selects the appropriate tackle, and prepare their horse for riding.
Prior to riding, pupils have been made aware of the simple safety rules about wearing boots and hard hats.
Once on the horse, all pupils have gone through basic instructions to the horse using knees, heels, and hands on the reigns. Initially, all riders have been led through the riding, accompanied by a leader, but once ready all have been given the opportunity to ride independently progressively making their horse walk, trot, and canter.
