Some of the pupils at the Keystone site of Mary Astell Academy have chosen to improve their knowledge of strategic games including chess, card games like rummy and Monopoly. There has been great interest in 'The Game of Kings' supported by the school's Princes Trust tutor and SENDCo, Lara Barnes; herself an international chess Arbiter.
As well as learning the moves and rules of the game the pupils have been researching the current world champion, Magnus Carlsen from Norway and other strong Grandmasters. They have enjoyed watching the excitement of 'blitz' chess on the internet and seeing the enormous interest in the game around the world.
The game has helped to improve their concentration and turn taking skills and the 'etiquette' is rubbing off, with players remembering to shake hands and say 'well played' to their opponents.
